Söderenergi recieves 75 million SEK for BECCS project
The Swedish Energy Agency announced its continued support to Söderenergi BECCS project and grants 75 million SEK to the next phase of the project. The goal is to capture 500 000 tonnes of biogenic carbon dioxide per year from 2030. Press release September 10, 2024 – summary in English.
The BECCS project at Söderenergi aims to remove carbon dioxide from the athmosphere and create negative emissions by capturing, liquefying and storing biogenic carbon dioxide from the Igelsta plant in Södertälje. The potential at the Igelsta plant is 500 000 tonnes of biogenic carbon dioxide per year from 2030 to be stored geologically. Negative emissions are necessary to reach the climate goals, both in Sweden and globally.
– The overall goal for this phase of the BECCS project is to reach an investment decision and start building a BECCS plant with commissioning in 2030, says project owner Leif Bodinson. In addition to this, the logistical chain for the removed carbon dioxide needs to be contracted.
The BECCS project at Söderenergi started in 2020 and the goal in the latest project phase was to start procurement of engineering. This was achieved in the summer of 2024 when procurement opened. Furthermore, work has been carried out in the permitting process.
– Söderenergi can and wants to make a difference. We know that the conditions at the Igelsta Plant in Södertälje are ideal for BECCS. We use biomass fuel in our CHP plant, there is enough space and energy for the process and we have our own port connected to the Baltic Sea. This sets Söderenergi in a leading position within the area of negative emissions. While the support from the Swedish Energy Agency helps a great deal, half of the money needed in this phase of the project will be financed in other ways, says Leif Bodinson.
Söderenergi is able to remove half a million tonne of carbon permanently every year. To reach Sweden’s climate goal 2045, 10 million tonnes per year need to be removed.
State funds are assigned to support the development of BECCS, for example The Industrial Leap (via the Swedish Energy Agency).
